Nieratko: The TNT 5 came out for Spring, and I wanted to know why you picked the design you did, and why it's awesome? Trujillo: "I just wanted something that the team would skate— something that all the boys could bring on trips and ride right away. I wanted to have a shoe that was already broken in pretty much; when you put these on, they feel broken in. You put them on for a minute and they feel like you've been wearing them for weeks. That's pretty crucial when you're going on trips like a lot of us constantly do. You gotta have something that feels good and broken in right away because you don't have time to break shit in on the road." Was there any different approach when designing this shoe? "Just simplify even more than before, I guess. All my other shoes are pretty simple, but I just wanted to make this as basic as possible. I like the thin sole and Old Skool feel, and I just tried to keep it along those lines and just add a few things in crucial areas and that's about it." It's #5. How's it stack up to the other ones? "Number 5 is way more easy to break in than any of the others. The other ones are good, but they took a couple days of actual skating and walking around to break them in. These, I just put a pair on today and they feel great, they feel like I've been wearing them for weeks. They're real comfortable right out of the box."

PRO VULC CONSTRUCTION
VANS ORIGINAL WAFFLE OUTSOLE
Back in ’66, Paul van Doren made the first soles of his new shoes twice as thick so they would wear longer and, unlike other shoe manufacturers, he used pure crepe rubber with no filler. That decision ended up shaping the company when the world’s first skateboarders discovered how Vans’ now-famous ORIGINAL WAFFLE outsole gum rubber compound let them feel their boards while keeping them firmly connected to them.
